汉语五
4th Period
ABout this COurse:
The Mandarin V class is a unique experience in that no textbook is used. Instead, our only materials will be drawn from the website 慢速中文 which provides blog posts in authentic Chinese spoken at a slow pace so that language learners can understand. All of our language content will come from these blog posts. During this class, students will learn about life in modern China and will use their language skills to discuss differences between their lives and the lives of Chinese students.
Additionally, Mandarin V students will complete a year long research project of their choosing. Students will have an opportunity every other week when I will be available to help them figure out next steps in the research process. By the end of the year, students will have an in depth understanding of a specific area of Chinese life or history which they will present, in Mandarin, to their classmates.

Language Policy:
Students will sign an updated Language Pledge at the beginning of the year. Class will be conducted entirely in Chinese for the first 60 minutes, and students will be expected to speak the language through all of class. Consistent use of English in class will result the student being removed from the classroom. While this may seem harsh, students need to keep in mind that hearing English will disrupt the "language zone" that we are trying to create. Doing so is harmful to the learning of his or her classmates and will not be tolerated.

Retake Policy:
I provide chances for students to regain lost points any quizzes we take in this class. I do this because I use quizzes to determine how and what students need to be working on during and outside of class. If a student can prove to me that he or she has studied adequately and feels comfortable with the material after the quiz has already been taken, I see no problem giving those points back. However, neither tests nor written journals may be retaken as those are meant to be proof that a student has successfully learned and applied the materials from class.
Note: I will not be providing class time for quiz retakes. Students must find time outside of class to retake a quiz.
