About this Course:
This course will focus on how two people can connect through comparing the details of their daily lives. Students will learn how to discuss school, class schedules, personal interests, and how to describe friends and family. By the end of the year, students should be able to have fluid, meaningful conversations with classmates and friends. In addition to this, students will delve deeper into Chinese culture through celebrated relevant holidays, studying historical figures and enjoying Chinese theater and art.
This course will use an integrated form of the "Flipped Mastery" approach which was introduced last year. Students will still be able to keep to their own pace of learning, but class time will also be used to hone conversational, interactive, and presentational skills when speaking Chinese.

Language Policy:
Students will be strongly encouraged to speak Mandarin while in the classroom. While there is no penalty for speaking English in class, it will not be tolerated for long. Students should keep in mind that the brain takes a while to switch from English to Chinese and back again. Not only will repeated switching impact their own ability to perform at their highest, but it will also impact the abilities of other students. Therefore, so that everyone may do their best in class, English will be kept to a minimum.
Retake Policy:
If a student receives a 90% or higher on a Mastery, he or she cannot retake it and must move on to new material.
If a student receives a grade between 80% and 90% on a Mastery, he or she may retake it, but if the student wants to move on, they may do so.
If a student receives a 79% or lower on a Mastery, he or she must retake it until the student achieves an 80% or higher.
