Advanced Mandarin
Not offered 2015-2016
About this Course:
There will be no Advanced Mandarin class offered during the 2015-2016 school year.
At this point in their studies, students have found comfort in speaking Mandarin and now seek to use their skills in a broader context. With this in mind, students of Advanced Mandarin will spend the year researching China through various lenses, for example: history, current events, the arts, linguistics, and other socio-cultural manifestations. Through this process of learning about China, students will gain such language skills as presentational, persuasive and discussion oriented speech and hone their writing skills.

Assistant Teaching:
One difficulty in attaining an advanced level in a language is keeping up with the basics. Because of this, students of this course are required to act as Assistant Teachers for the earlier levels. There are two paths from which students may choose:
- Students attend a Mandarin II or III level class and do such jobs as tutoring struggling students, teach grammatical structures, proctor Mastery tests, or even run through drills with students.
- Students open up a “help desk” taking place during an open period of time during which they would be available to help struggling students. Additionally these students might help with the planning of lower level courses.
Grade Breakdown:
- Assistant Teaching: 25%
- Class Participation: 55%
- Project: 20%
